Overview

The careful conversion of a nineteenth-century grain store into a coffee roastery, cafe, and workshop.

The brief

The listed building was structurally tired and cold, and any intervention had to satisfy conservation officers while still working as a modern food business.

Our approach

We repaired the timber frame honestly, inserted a lightweight insulated liner that stops short of the old walls, and expressed every new element in blackened steel so old and new never pretend to be one another.

The outcome

The roastery is now a landmark on the harbour, the building is warm for the first time in its life, and the project took the regional Heritage Craft Award.
